The bulk of these talks, however, date from two periods and locations. Saint Maximilian gave the first group of conferences in 1933 during the early days of the "Garden of the Immaculate" (Mugenzai no Sono) in Nagasaki, Japan. The second group dates from 1936-37. Saint Maximilian delivered these talks at Niepokalanow as the ominous signs of global conflict grew in intensity.

The conferences are addressed to the friars of these two friaries. In Niepokalanow, the conferences could last up to an hour, although the typical duration was thirty minutes. When he was home, Saint Maximilian often delivered two conferences a day. However, his health would sometimes prevent him from meeting this rigorous schedule. The conferences were quite informal and involved a great deal of question and answer dialogue. Typically, 50-60 friars would attend the conferences. At times, they occurred in the chapel. At other times, Saint Maximilian spoke in a simple room, adorned only with a picture of his beloved Immaculata. Often, he spoke while seated on the floor with the friars around him.

Texts of these talks do not exist. The conferences which follow are transcriptions made by the friars in attendance. The texts bear the signatures of several different friars who acted as recorders. Often, the note-taking friars hid behind another friar so as to avoid notice because, in his humility, Saint Maximilian did not believe his words to be worthy of saving. Professor Foster spent 13 years traveling back and forth to Poland to speak with and interview those friars who knew St. Maximilian personally. It is a labor of love and must be on the shelf of anyone with a sincere interest in or devotion to St. Maximilian.

With copious use of Saint Maksymilian's original writings and of testimonies given by his confreres and people who knew him in Poland and Japan, this biography presents the Saint's life, mission, and martyrdom in the historical and cultural context in which he lived. Written in a narrative style, the biography is anchored on primary sources and enables the reader "to meet" the Saint and discover unique and inspiring aspects of his life and ministry. Kolbe scholars do not hesitate to consider it a most reliable source in uncovering the spiritual legacy of one of the greatest followers of Christ in the 20th Century, whom Pope John Paul II named the Patron Saint of our difficult times.

"Of all the biographies concerning Saint Maksymilian with which I am familiar, this one, in my opinion, is the most comprehensive and authentic." --Brother Hieronim Maria Wierzba OFM Conv., Niepokalanow, Poland, Secretary to St. Maksymilian Kolbe
["Marytown Press Books","Maximilian Kolbe","Subject_Saint Specific","Subject_St. Maximilian Kolbe","Type_Books
[2962855425
"option1":"Default Title", "option2":null, "option3":null
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/7619/products/image_4_0.jpg?v=1432668045","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/7619/products/marysknight.jpg?v=1452796058
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/7619/products/image_4_0.jpg?v=1432668045
Title
/products/marys-knight-paperback" }

He has the ability, rarely seen, to take the reader with him and permit one to experience life as it was experienced by those who lived and were formed by the Saint. He does this through a vivid depiction of his own senses and feelings which formed him as a friar minor and permitted him to persevere in his religious consecration for 64 years of his life. These act as a tunnel through which one can be transported back in time to experience what he experienced not only of the Saint but also of the historic events that took place at the time and its effects on the friars living at Niepokalanow.
