Soon after, he joined a Franciscan seminary and took his final vows in 1914.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBefore his ordination as a priest, Maximilian founded the Immaculata Movement devoted to Our Lady. He spread the Movement through missionary work in Japan and India. He fell ill during his travels and returned home to Poland in 1936. After the Nazi invasion in 1939, he was arrested and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn July 31, 1941, in retribution for one prisoner's escape, ten men were chosen to die. Maximilian offered himself in place of a young husband and father. He endured two weeks of torture before he was executed with an injection of carbolic acid. He was canonized on October 10, 1982.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Maximilian Kolbe is recognized today as the patron of those addicted to drugs. Miraculously, Roch was born with a red cross on his chest, the sign of a very particular predestination.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOrphaned at age 20, Roch joined the Third Order of Saint Francis and cared for victims of the plague in Rome, Italy. He performed many miraculous healings by making the sign of the Cross until he became a plague victim himself. Roch returned to Montpellier and retreated into the forest to die, but instead was befriended by a dog who brought him food until he recovered. When Roch returned to town, he was arrested for being a spy and was jailed for five years. He never mentioned his noble connections and was cared for by an angel until his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe died in 1327 while still in prison and was canonized 100 years after his death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSaint Roch is recognized today as the patron of those suffering from a contagious disease.
